Directors' Showcase: East of Berlin
When and Where
Description
East of Berlin, a three-person play by Halifax-based playwright, Hannah Moscovitch, follows Rudi, a postwar German as he attempts to cope with the discovery of his father’s past as a Nazi Doctor. Wrung with bitterness and dark humour, the play’s intimacy with its main character produces a feeling of suspicion and dread. On multiple occasions in this episodic piece, the audience is asked to evaluate Rudi’s behaviour as he attempts to escape the shadows of his familial past, using deliberate and willful distortions of his experiences. The play begs the question: Are we stranded to live in the shadows of our parents?
