[In-] Staged Reading
When and Where
Description
[In-] is a compilation of artist-led conversations about medical assistance in dying, or MAID. In particular, the play responds to Canada’s decision to delay requests under the condition of mental illness until 2024. In verbatim theatre style, the script takes from conversations with the original 2023 production's cast and crew, over the course of a week, and the cast play versions of themselves and the crew. This is the first phase of Ethan's performance research on MAID; with this phase, [In-] is structured as a reverse ‘vocal masque,’ where artist-researchers complete the play title by the end of the show.
How can we make legal and medical language accessible when not all know or care about it? When do we stop recycling social justice issues? How do we show pure truth? These are the many urgent questions this play asks. Additionally, the use of the camcorder has a dual purpose: Can we archive and document a conversation that awaits new information or discoveries, like a ‘time capsule’? Can talking in front of a camcorder offer catharsis or therapy?
