Biography
Tia Ashley Kushniruk 亚 女弟 is an MA student at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies. Her research interests are rooted in her dance background and positioning as a practising dance-theatre maker.
She has been an active member in the Canadian contemporary dance community since 2013, and has worked with Cirque Du Soleil, Jake W. Hastey (Toy Guns Dance Theatre), Antony Hamilton (CHUNKY MOVE), Tessa Rae Kuz, Phillip Geller, Celia Jade Green, Benjamin Kamino, Heidi Strauss (adelheid), Christopher House (Toronto Dance Theatre), Shay Kuebler (SK/Radical System Art), Rock Bottom Movement, Susannah Haight, and Christianne Ullmark touring Nationally from coast to coast and Internationally to China, Colombia, Israel, Germany, Austria, Iceland and France.
Her work has been presented by Festival Internacional Nomada, the Beijing International Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge, The National Arts Centre, Fluid Festival, commonGround Arts Festival, Found Festival, and Mile Zero. She is the first recipient of the Catalyst Theatre Confluence Fellowship, a 2023 EATF recipient, was a conversations on performance cohort member at FTA 2024, and recently completed a mentorship with Toronto-based performance artist Bridget Moser.
Kushniruk will be touring her new work a practice: Misinterpretation (a performance) to Edmonton and Calgary in October 2024, and in May 2025 will premiere her new ensemble work 366 at Mile Zero’s Zero Lab Residency in Edmonton.
