Biography

Andy Jin is an incoming master's student at the Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies at the University of Toronto. He is interested in the study of Chinese traditional theatre, particularly Peking opera, and the historical narratives in drama. Regarding the first area, he aims to explore judicial plays (公案戏) in Chinese drama and the politicization of Peking opera. For the former, he hopes to analyze the plays and performances of judicial plays to discover the social relationships and political nuances of ancient Chinese society. For the latter, he plans to use Peking opera as a medium to discuss the interplay between culture and politics in modern Chinese society. Regarding his second area of interest, Andy seeks to explore how drama reconstructs history and the mutual influences among drama, social ideologies and history, which in turn shape the re-creation of historical narratives.

Additionally, Andy serves as the chief editor of one Chinese traditional theatre social media platform, is a learner of the "Xiaosheng(小生)" role type (young male characters in Chinese traditional theatre), and works as a freelancer, regularly writing critiques of historical dramas, films, and literary works. These experiences have fueled his passion and motivation for engaging in theatre-related research, creation and practice.
