Biography

Daniel Tessy is an Iraqi-Jamaican-Canadian multidisciplinary theatre artist and technician. He is a sound designer/composer, recording artist, lighting designer, technical director, educator and more. He received a BFA in Theatre Design and Production from UBC and started his career in the unceded, ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations (“Vancouver”).

His sound design practice involves a mix of field recording and digital synthesis to create original atmospheric sound effects and music for theatre and film. While initially approaching composition from an indie rock music background, he works in an eclectic mix of genres and methodologies, often combining electronic music and acoustic instrumentation to create contemporary soundscapes. He has produced original scores or soundscapes for companies such as Renegade Arts Society, Holy Crow Arts, Green Thumb Theatre, United Players of Vancouver, Dirt Road Productions, Capilano University and more. His work as a recording artist
outside theatre has spanned 10 years, several bands and projects, multiple stints as a session musician, and live and recorded audio engineering.

His career outside sound and music work has included lighting design, projection design, directing, stage management, technical direction/production management, and venue management. He had a long collaboration with UBC’s Creative Writing department, supporting new works by their faculty and students with directing and lighting/sound/production design work. He has also served as the Technical Director of Granville Island’s Revue Stage in Vancouver, and as a Technical Director for the Alberta Ballet Company. He held a long-term teaching contract at Capilano University in North Vancouver, teaching Sound Design, Intro to Tech Theatre and Technical Direction. He’s just relocated to Tkaronto to participate in its vibrant and diverse arts community.
