Biography

Ara Glenn-Johanson (BFA, NYU-Tisch; MFA, UC Davis) is a performer and director-choreographer, as well as an accomplished instructor of Grotowski-based physical acting and movement, who has taught at Centennial College and UC Davis. As a performer, she's been seen in Taylor Mac's The Lily's Revenge at both The American Repertory Theater and The Magic Theater, The Donkey Show at The American Repertory Theater, Sitting in a Circle with Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project, the international tour of This Is All I Need with Mugwumpin, the UK tour of Mankind/Pride of Life with PLS, Heeliomali and Trolley Dances with Epiphany Productions Sonic Dance Theatre, Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night at Impact Theatre, and countless underground performance experiments and improvisations internationally — including frequently performing in her own compositions, which have been presented in New York City, San Francisco, Toronto, San Diego, and Boston. Ara was an Artist in Residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts (CA) and The Garage (SF) as well as a recipient of the Fort Mason In Performance Grant (Hewlett Foundation). Ara also works in film/TV and commercials including The Judge for Warner Bros. Entertainment. Directing and choreography projects include Act 3 (The Love Act) of The Lily's Revenge at The American Repertory Theater, The Magic Fish at Boston's Outside the Box Festival, and She Kills Monsters at The Boston Center for the Arts, among many other pieces.
