Anna Paliy
Anna Paliy is a doctoral candidate in the Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies at University of Toronto. She holds an MA and an Honours BA in Comparative Literature. Anna is working to complete her dissertation with the support of a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and the JHI Amilcare Iannucci Graduate Fellowship in the Humanities, analyzing artistic receptions of Eastern European ballet across cultures at the start of the twentieth century. The project explores how the sensory language of dance is historically interpreted by women spectators in visual forms such as sketching, painting, and sculpture. Anna is a member, research assistant, and social media coordinator at University of Toronto's Institute for Dance Studies. She is also a 2019 alumna of the Emerging Arts Critics Programme co-organized by the National Ballet of Canada, Canadian Opera Company, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Her scholarly writing has been published in Feminist Modernist Studies journal, while her music and dance reviews appear in The Dance Current and The WholeNote magazines as well as the Blue Riband arts blog. Formerly a competitive rhythmic gymnast in Ukraine (Kyiv), France (Lyon), and Ontario (London), Anna now enjoys practicing circus acrobatics and painting in her spare time.
